While the purchase price of an electric vehicle can sometimes be higher upfront than a comparable gasoline car, the ongoing operating cost per mile is dramatically lower. Over a typical 5-year (60,000-mile) ownership period, fuel and maintenance savings frequently offset several thousand dollars of upfront vehicle cost.

1. Cost-Per-Mile Fuel Comparison
To understand why electric vehicles save money on energy, we must convert both liquid fuel and electricity into cost per mile driven:

In this baseline scenario, electricity is 67.7% cheaper per mile than gasoline. Driving 12,000 miles annually saves $1,059 on fuel alone.
2. Reduced Mechanical Maintenance & Wear Items
According to consumer telemetry data from the US Department of Energy (DOE), internal combustion engines contain over 2,000 moving mechanical parts, including pistons, crankshafts, spark plugs, fuel injectors, oxygen sensors, catalytic converters, mufflers, and multi-speed automatic transmissions. All of these components require regular fluid flushes, filters, and scheduled replacement.
By contrast, an electric drivetrain contains roughly 20 moving parts (primarily the electric motor rotors and reduction gearing). Key areas where EV owners save money on maintenance include:
- No Oil Changes: Saves ~$150–$300 annually on synthetic oil and oil filters.
- Regenerative Braking: When you lift off the accelerator pedal, the electric motor reverses direction, acting as a generator to feed energy back into the battery while slowing the car down. 3. Time-of-Use (TOU) Electricity Rates
You can optimize your savings even further by enrolling in your local power utility's Time-of-Use (TOU) EV rate plan. Many utilities charge lower off-peak rates (e.g., $0.08/kWh between 12:00 AM and 6:00 AM) to encourage overnight charging when grid demand is low. Modern EVs and home chargers allow you to schedule automatic overnight charging, cutting your annual fuel bill by an additional 40% to 50%.
