How does the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation work?
The Mifflin-St Jeor formula is widely recognized as the most accurate clinical method for estimating human Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) in healthy adults. BMR represents the number of calories your body burns in a rested, fasting state just to keep basic systems (breathing, brain activity, core temp) functioning.
Women: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) – (5 × age in years) – 161
Once the BMR is calculated, it is multiplied by physical activity multipliers to estimate your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE). To achieve weight loss, we apply a safe, sustainable deficit of 500 kcal per day (promoting roughly 1 lb of fat loss per week) while adjusting protein intake higher to prevent muscle catabolism.
